An unfortunately named Manteca, CA woman has been harassed by reporters and others, as she not only shares the same name as Melissa Huckaby of Tracy, CA, she is also a Sunday School teacher (like the accused), and lives only 14 miles from Tracy.
The similarities are uncanny:
Melissa Chantel Huckaby, accused of murdering 8-year-old Sandra Cantu, is 28, a Sunday school teacher and is a single mom with a 5-year-old daughter.
Innocent Melissa Suzanne Huckaby is 28, a Sunday school teacher and is a single mom with a 5-year-old daughter.
How eerie (and for Melissa Suzanne Huckaby, frightening) is that?
She has received death threats, removed her MySpace page for obvious reasons, received request for interviews, all because of the mix-up. Melissa Suzanne Huckaby has even started hyphenating her name, using the surname of her ex-husband, Furdala (Huckaby-Furdala).
She told a local paper, the Tracy Press:
“I get death threats all the time. I’ve had news vans at my house — my picture has been all over the media. I’m honestly scared for my safety.”
Her mother, Cyndi, pictured above left with Huckaby-Fudala, said:
"All it takes is for one person to take matters into their own hands. All of a sudden our lives are turned around. And it’s not our fault.
"We’re just as devastated as everyone else. And now we have to worry about this, about my daughter’s safety. This is definitely not a 15 minutes of fame I would ever wish on anybody."
One also has to wonder about the safety of Huckaby-Fudala's two daughters (she has a second) as well as the possible teasing, and more, they may face in school. Hopefully, this will all blow over as people realize the reality (and X-Files type weirdness) of the situation.
