Melissa Huckaby a Suspect in Arson Fires

The hits just keep on coming. Melissa Huckaby, already charged with murder including special circumstances in the Sandra Cantu case, and suspected of a second incident with another girl, now has arson to worry about.

La Palma police Capt. Jim Enright said that Melissa Huckaby, 28, was considered a "person of interest" in two fires set at a home where she rented a room in 2007. However, a gag order issued earlier this week by a San Joaquin County judge in the Sandra Cantu murder case prevented Enright from discussing Huckaby further.

Authorities said the two fires caused nearly $90,000 in damage. Although she was questioned, Huckaby was never charged in the crimes.

Shortly before Melissa Huckaby's arrest, Tracy police contacted La Palma police in order to find out about anything she had done in La Palma. Now the arson incidents are considered part of the murder investigation.

Melissa Huckaby is scheduled to appear in court Friday, at which time she is expected to enter her plea in her case.
