General Motors Set to Dump Pontiac Brand: Report

The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that General Motors is set to drop its Pontiac brand, and close more factories. GM previously dropped the Oldmobile brand in 2004.

Yep, General Motors moves the Pontiac Firebird to Chevrolet or Buick, that's going to be the end of that car (sob).

In addition, the WSJ, citing sources familiar with the events, stated the company is set to launch a bond campaign to eliminate billions in debt.

GM was given 60 days of operating cash to bridge the time until June 1st, a deadline to restructure or go bankrupt. It's possible, according to the report, that while GM will definitely drop the Pontiac brand, it may sell it rather than eliminate it.

As Pontiac contains the aforementioned Firebird, it's possible a sale might snag a significant amount of money for GM.

It is true that shedding some of the brands that it sells should create efficiencies within GM and reduce operating costs.

GM has received $15.4 billion in bailout money since December and has said it will need more than $2 billion in additional funds to survive through Q2.
