Already Strained by Flu, Mexico City Feels Large Earthquake

Already feeling the pressure of a swine flu variant which is stressing their emergency and health services, Mexico received another shock on Monday, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake centered near Chilpancingo, about 130 miles southwest of Mexico City.

The earthquake also shook the resort town of Acapulco, being centered within 50 miles of that city, nearly 3x as close as Mexico City.

The swine flu has killed over 100 people in Mexico, and Mexican authorities have told Mexico City residents to stay indoors. Meanwhile the U.S. has declared a public health emergency over it.

Despite the distance from the epicenter, Mexico City felt the earthquake strongly, because the quake was relatively shallow and the ground under the capital tends to magnify shock waves, being built on a lake bed.

To some, the recession, the swine flu, and the earthquake seem like a 'perfect storm' of disasters.

Sarai Luna Pajas, a 22-year-old social services worker said:

"I'm scared. We Mexicans are not used to living with so much fear, but all that is happening, the economic crisis, the illnesses and now this, it feels like the Apocalypse."
