At a time when she is definitely needed, Tuesday the Senate confirmed former Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius as head of the Department of Health and Human services, 65 - 31.
While the GOP made a big issue of the fact that HHS had no secretary, they didn't mention their role in it: a vote on Kathleen Sebelius had been delayed due to GOP concerns over her stance on abortion.
Despite this, some in the GOP defended Sebelius, with former Senate GOP leader Bob Dole, also from Kansas, testifying on her behalf in March. He said:
"Sebelius' strength is that she understands health care [and is] willing and able ... to bring parties together in very critical areas."
She was also touted by Kansas GOP senators Pat Roberts and Sam Brownback, as well as GOP Govs. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California and Jon Huntsman of Utah.
Former Sen. Tom Daschle of South Dakota, Obama's first choice for secretary of health and human services, withdrew on February 3 after controversy erupted over --- what else --- his tax records.
