Even as more deaths are confirmed in Mexico, Mexico's health minister said the swine flu epidemic in his country "is now in its declining phase." Despite that, the U.S. and five other countries in Europe and Latin America reported new cases Sunday.

Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova said "evolution of the epidemic is now in its declining phase," suggesting that data shows the epidemic peaked sometime between April 23 and April 28. At that time, Mexico took drastic measures — closing the nation's schools, most of its businesses, banning mass public gatherings, even closing non-essential government offices — which he states have helped curb the flu's spread.

Many around the world have questioned both the media and the WHO's reaction to the swine flu. In fact, by moving quickly from level 3 to level 4 and shortly later 5, the WHO in fact helped spread some of the hyperbole surrounding the disease.

At this point the only confirmed deaths have been in Mexico, and a Mexican immigrant baby in the U.S.

While Egypt moves to slaughter hundreds of thousands of pigs, the World Health Organization and other organizations have been under extremem pressure from pork lobbies to assure the public that food from pigs poses no risk.

Dr. Peter Ben Embarek, a WHO senior scientist on food safety said:

"You don't get this disease through eating pork, and therefore there is no reason to be afraid of eating pork or pork products. As long as pork is cooked the way we normally cook meat, there is no problem and no risk at all to get this disease."

In fact, undercooked pork is more likely to give you trichinosis than swine flu.

At the same time most say just use common sense: stay home if sick, wash your hands, cover your mouth when coughing.
