Silvio Berlusconi, 72, Prime Minister of Italy, has never made a secret of his womanizing. In fact, he's been blatant about it. And thus, one might ask Veronica Lario, his wife, "What took you so long?"
The news comes, however, less than a week after Veronica Lario wrote an open letter criticizing her husband for affairs with much younger women.
In her letter to the ANSA news agency, Lario noted her anger over press reports that Berlusconi had attended the 18th birthday party of Noemi Letizia (in Naples). Letizia has said in several recent interviews that she called the prime minister “Daddy” and that he gave her a gold and diamond necklace.
Apparently, Daddy refers to "sugar daddy," right?
Lario told ANSA:
“That surprised me, because he never attended the 18th birthday parties of his own children, even if he was invited.”
Today Veronica Lario, 52, told Italian papers La Repubblica and La Stampa:
“I’d like to close the curtain on our married life. I was forced to take this step. I don’t want to add anything else.”
These aren't the first statements or open letters that Lario has made. In 2007, La Repubblica published a letter from Lario in which she demanded an apology from Berlusconi after news reports quoted him as praising the beauty of a showgirl, saying:
“If I weren’t already married, I would marry you right now.”
Berlusconi later named her equal opportunities minister.
At the time, Lario:
“These are statements I consider damaging to my dignity.”
That same day, Berlusconi quickly issued a public apology:
“Your dignity should not be an issue: I will guard it like a precious material in my heart even when thoughtless jokes come out of my mouth. Forgive me, however, I beg of you, and take this public testimony of private pride that submits to your anger as an act of love. One among many. A huge kiss. Silvio.”
Let's see if he can get out of this one, or if he even cares.
