Mexico Lowers Swine Flu Alert Level

The country's Health Secretary has already announced that swine flu is on the decline in Mexico, and on Monday Mexico lowered the alert level from red to orange.

In fact, Mexico appears ready to allow cafes, libraries, and museums to re-open this week, with Health Secretary Angel Cordova also saying late Sunday that Mexico's government would start distributing swine flu safety recommendations to businesses.

At the same time that Mexico is doing this, officials worldwide continue to caution against complacency, and it is widely believed that the World Health Organization will soon raise the swine flu alert level to 6, signaling a global pandemic.

WHO spokesman Thomas Abraham said:

"We have consistently said a pandemic is imminent. It's only a matter of time before we move to phase 6 unless the virus suddenly becomes weaker and dies off."

The U.N. is reportedly concerned over a second possible wave, "striking with a vengeance."

However, to many it appears panic over the disease has been overblown as, at least outside of Mexico, the symptoms appear no worse than a mild flu.
