Unidentified men armed with grenades and automatic weapons attacked a wedding party in SE Turkey on Monday, killing at least 45 people.
Two girls survived by hiding under the bodies of slain friends. The girls told Mehmet Besir Ayanoglu, the mayor of Mardin, a Turkish city near Bilge, where the wedding attack took place:
"'They raided the house, we were in two rooms, they opened fire on everyone, they were wearing masks.'"
Blood feuds are frequent in the region, so that is one theory. However, another theory is that the Turkish wedding attack may have involved rival members of state-sponsored militia set up to combat Kurdish separatist guerrillas.
The attack occurred during the ceremony for the daughter of Cemil Celebi, a former village official who was among the wounded in the Turkish wedding attack.
It remains unclear whether security forces have arrested the wedding attackers.
