While not the first death caused by swine flu in the U.S., Texas officials noted on Tuesday the first swine flu related death of a U.S. resident.
The woman, a 33-year-old schoolteacher who had recently given birth to a health baby, died early Tuesday and had been hospitalized since April 19.
However, Texas state health department spokeswoman Carrie Williams was careful to note that the woman had “chronic underlying health conditions,” and Leonel Lopez, Cameron County epidemiologist indicatd those conditions were exacerbated by the swine flu.
Lopez said:
“The swine flu is very benign by itself. Bby the time she came to see us it was already too late.”
The only other swine flu death in the U.S. was of a Mexico City boy who had been visiting relatives in Brownsville, near Harlingen, TX. He died last week at a Houston children’s hospital.
