It's that time when the Social Security department releases the list of top baby names in the prior year. For the top baby names 2009 list (which is really for 2008), Emma ousted Emily as America’s favorite name for a baby girl. Meanwhile, Jacob held on to the top spot for baby boy names for the 10th year in a row.
Emma is so close to Emily, I have trouble seeing much difference, personally. At any rate, Emma was No. 3 in 2007. Jacob, as I said, was No. 1 in 2007.
Why is the Social Security department involved? Well, as I know from my own experience with my baby girl, you typically can (although you don't have to) request a Social Security number before you leave the hospital. It makes sense that they would compile this information about the most popular baby names.
