America’s two other swine flu deaths, a toddler from Mexico and a pregnant woman, each had underlying conditions. In this case also, it appears the many had underlying health conditions, which were, in fact, heart problems.
To this date, there there have been more than 4,150 confirmed cases of swine flu in 29 countries. There have been 48 deaths in Mexico, three U.S. deaths and one fatality in Costa Rica, as well as a fatality in Canada announced on Friday.
In Canada, a woman who was in her 30s died, but once again appeared to have pre-existing medical conditions.
The WHO had raised the alert level for the disease to 5, which indicates a pandemic is imminent more than a week ago, but has made no further moves since then.
However, Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the CDC said he expects the World Health Organization may again raise its global warning.
“I would be surprised if we don’t get to a level 6,” Besser said.
