For now, at least, Carrie Prejean will continue to wear the crown, but without any responsibility, sort of like a suspension. Meanwhile, it will be up to Donald Trump, Miss USA pageant owner, to decide if she loses the crown.
At the same time, Miss California runner-up Tami Farrell has been appointed as the official ambassador to the pageant's newly launched Beauty of California initiative.
Miss California co-executive directors Shanna Moakler and Keith Lewis made it clear that if Prejean is dismissed it will be because of her actions, not her beliefs. Prejean made headlines with her anti-gay marriage answer to a question from openly gay Perez Hilton during the Miss USA pageant.
The contract Prejean signed prohibits Miss California from making personal appearances, giving interviews or making commercials without permission from pageant officials. And she's certainly violated that, appearing in anti-gay marriage ads.
She also signed a statement saying she had not appeared nude, or semi-nude, once again violated by Prejean.
"Up until now, we have just been riding along, pretty much a passenger on this runaway train," Lewis said. "As of today, that ends."
Whether or not Prejean retains her title beyond tomorrow morning, Moakler and Lewis today appointed what will more or less serve as a shadow Miss California, installing runner-up Tami Farrell as the official ambassador to the pageant's newly launched Beauty of California initiative.
In her new role, which sounds an awful lot like Prejean's current role, Farrell will represent the pageant at appearances across the state.
Regarding Farrell's appointment, Lewis said:
"Regardless of what takes place tomorrow, we're still going to be able to fulfill our vision. If Miss California is unavailable, or it would be unwise to put her into a specific appearance, we now have an ambassador that can represent us so we can just get back to business."
Ironic isn't it? Donald Trump just got done with Celebrity Apprentice 2009, and here he has yet another chance to say "you're fired."
