New Jobless Claims Leap 637K

Trending good news appears to not be something we're going to have happen, at least not soon. While last week's new jobless numbers were better than expected, this week's were worse than expected.

The Labor Department on Thursday said the number of new jobless claims rose to a seasonally adjusted 637,000, from a revised 605,000 the previous week. That was above analysts' expectations of 610,000.

Despite the new jobless figures, analysts focused on a positive note: new jobless claims peaked in March. Paul Dales, U.S. economist at Capital Economics, wrote in a research note:

"This is yet more evidence that we are now past the worst."

That may still be a little optimistic. It's only been two months since the peak. And at the same time, the number of people continuing to receive jobless benefits increased to 6.56 million from 6.36 million, setting a record for the 15th straight week. Once again, these numbers were worse than analysts expected.
