Venus Williams Out at the French Open

For the 3rd straight year, Venus Williams has been eliminated from the French Open in the third round. Williams was seeded 3rd, and lost in straight sets to 29th-seed Agnes Szavay of Hungary 6-0, 6-4.

Venus Williams has won seven Grand Slam events, but her best finish at the French Open, played on slower clay courts, was reaching the finals in 2002, where she lost to her sister Serena. Williams may have been fatigued; because of scheduling and matches suspended by darkness she was playing for the third straight day.

Thus ends Venus Williams' bid to win the only Grand Slam that’s eluded her. She had needed three sets to overcome her first two opponents at Roland Garros stadium, and did not win a game in Friday's match until 39 minutes had passed.

Venus Williams is still in the French Open, however, with sister Serena in the doubles competition. They are scheduled to play a second round doubles match later today.

Speaking of Serena Williams, who is seeded number two in the French Open, her 3rd-round match will be tomorrow. She will face unseeded Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.
