Rod Blagojevich, the ousted Illinois governor who allegedly attempted to sell President Barack Obama's vacated senate seat to the highest bidder, seems headed for a spring 2010 trial. That is, if the judge involved has his way.
U.S. District Judge James Zagel told a hearing Monday that if the case goes to trial he wants it to be held between April and June of next year. Furthermore, Zagel said he'd prefer Rod Blagojevich's trial closer to April, as well.
Don't expect a speedy trial, though. Prosecutors are estimating that it will take them three months at trial to present the evidence they've got against Rod Blagojevich.
Interestingly, Judge Zagel is allowing Rod Blagojevich to use campaign funds to pay for his defense. Note, however, that Zagel is monitoring the expenditures, probably closely.
Still more lowlights in the Blagojevich scandal: Rod's wife Patti Blagojevich is going to appear on NBC's reality TV show “I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!”
Patti Blagojevich has previously told AP in a telephone interview in May, “I didn't seek this out. And if it wasn't for our financial situation I probably wouldn't consider it. You do what you have to do when you're, you know, a mother of two.”
Some of the offers that Rod Blagojevich was trying to foster involved perks for Patti Blagojevich, if you recall. Patti probably isn't going to enjoy her time on reality TV. On "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!," celebrities live in jungle conditions with few comforts and vie to earn human essentials.
