The latest version of the Windows operating system, Windows 7, will be in general commercial availability on Oct. 22nd.
Bill Veghte, senior vice president for Microsoft's Windows business, said:
"We feel confident that we will deliver Windows 7 with our partners on Oct. 22."
Microsoft also confirmed there would be a upgrade program, much as it did during the Windows Vista launch.
Those who buy Vista PCs as the Windows 7 launch approaches will received a free or discounted copy of Windows 7. It's the only sensible move, as otherwise consumers would simply stop buying and wait for the new OS.
Pricing will be up to individual computer makers. Microsoft the upgrade program will apply to all versions aside from Windows Vista Basic.
