Ten-Year Old Battles Breast Cancer

Powell-Auslam, from Fullerton, CA, was diagnosed with breast cancer in April. She has already had a mastectomy and been through her first chemotherapy treatment. Hannah had complained about an itch on her side and when her mother looked, she felt a lump.

Chemotherapy has been tailored for Hannah, as dosages and treatments were obviously developed for adults. In preparation for the loss of hair that accompanies chemotherapy, Hannah had her hair shorn off, and as a show of solidarity, her father, grandfather and little brother all got buzzed as well.

Besides being rare or almost unknown in a child, the type of cancer Hannah got, secretory carcinoma, appears in less than 1% of breast cancer case.

Mother Carrie Auslam said of her daughter:

em>"She cried for about three minutes and she's had a couple of moments. But she stood up after we talked and she goes, 'Let's do it.'"
