Randy Johnson Wins 300th Game

The Big Unit, Randy Johnson tossed two-hit ball over six innings, leading the San Francisco Giants to a 5-1 victory over the Washington Nationals in the first game of a doubleheader. In doing so, he joined the storied club of 300-game winners in major league baseball.

Randy Johnson also joined the club on his first try, which is unusual. Most pitchers have taken two or tries to get their 300th win. In fact, Johnson became the first pitcher since Tom Seaver in 1985 to earn his 300th win on his first try. The six 300-game winners between Seaver and Johnson failed to do so.

Johnson is now the 24th pitcher and sixth left-hander in major-league history to win his 300th game. The game had been scheduled for Tuesday, but had been rained out, and rescheduled for today.

Randy Johnson also became the second-oldest pitcher to win 300, at 45 years and 267 days. Phil Niekro was the oldest at 46 years, 188 days.

Johnson said:

“It’s been a long road. I guess the one word that would sum it all up is that I’ve persevered.”

Randy Johnson left leading 2-1, but nearly wound up with a no-decision. Washington loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth inning, but then Adam Dunn was called out on strikes on a full count knee-high fastball from Giants reliever Brian Wilson.
