In an effort to offset all the good things that National Running Day did to your body on Wednesday, it's National Doughnut (or Donut) Day 2009 It's not as though chains like Dunkin' Donuts or Krispy Kreme have banded together to increase your cholesterol level, but still.
That said, major chains like Dunkin' Donuts and Krispy Kreme are having "celebrations" on this National Donut Day 2009. Dunkin' Donuts restaurants throughout the country will give every customer a free donut of their choice, with the purchase of any beverage, limit one per customer.
Krispy Kreme is going Dunkin' Donuts one better. They are giving each customer a free donut, but without any purchase requirement (at least, according to their press release). It's free donuts. Who can turn that down? I am wondering if there will be a free cup of coffee too.
Naturally, you are bound to find National Donut Day 2009 celebrations at local shops, and other major national chains as well. Free donuts, with or without purchase, and more. Have at it!
National Donut Day, held the first Friday of June each year, was started by the Chicago Salvation Army more than 70 years ago. It was set up as a fundraiser. However, apparently the tradition has not continued. As I visited the Chicago Salvation Army's website, I did not find any reference to National Donut Day there. Keep your cholesterol and health in mind when eating Doughnuts today. In case you do eat too much donuts today, make sure you have home cholesterol test ready to check your level.
