The 2009 Tony Awards were hosted by Neil Patrick Harrisof TV's How I Met Your Mother. Among the notable winners were Liza Minnelli, who won her 4th Tony Award for her one-woman show "Liza's at the Palace" in the special theatrical event category. Will Ferrell, who made his Broadway debut in "You're Welcome, America: A Final Night with George W. Bush," lost to Minnelli in that category.
Also at the 2009 Tony Awards, Geoffrey Rush won his first Tony Award tonight for his lead performance in the revival of Eugene Ionesco's "Exit the King." Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden won the Tony Award for lead actress in a play for Yasmina Reza's "God of Carnage."
Add to the superlatives Angela Lansbury, who won her fifth Tony Award tonight, becoming the second actress in history to win as many Tonys. Angela Lansbury, 83, won for her role in the revival of Noel Coward's "Blithe Spirit."
