Iran's Supreme Ruler Orders Voter Fraud Investigation

You might think the President of Iran is the ultimate power in that country. In reality that rests in the hands of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has ordered the Guardian Council to examine allegations of voter fraud in the recently held Iranian elections.

Official results have declared President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad the winner in a landslide victory. This doesn't match with exit polls, some of which show Ahmadinejad dead last among all candidates, with pro-reform candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi winning the election.

Originally, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei embraced the results. However, the move follows Mousavi appeal in writing Sunday to the Guardian Council, a 12-member body that is a part of Iran's theocracy. Mousavi also met with Khamenei on Sunday.

Mousavi's backers have waged three days of street protests in Tehran, and had planned a protest today. However, the rally was called off, as the government has declared a moratorium on all protest gatherings. Despite that, protesters still gathered, stirring new violence.

The Guardian Council aid it would rule within 10 days on two official complaints it had received from Mousavi and another losing candidate, Mohsen Rezaie. However, it should be noted that prior to the election, its chairman, Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, had endorsed Ahmadinejad.
