Despite his opponent's 6'10" size, Roger Federer beat Ivo Karlovic and his huge serves Wednesday, thus reaching the Wimbledon semifinals and moving closer to his record 15th Grand Slam championship. The result was 6-3, 7-5, 7-6.
Moving past the Wimbled quarter finals and into the semifinals, Federer reached his 21st consecutive semifinal at a Grand Slam tournament and extended his winning streak to 17 matches. Besides a record 15th Grand Slam title, if Federer wins he would close in on his sixth Wimbledon title.
Speaking of Wimbledon quarter final upsets, Federer's next opponent will be Germany's Tommy Haas, who upset fourth-seeded Novak Djokovic 7-5, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.
Other Wimbledon men's quarter finals matches scheduled for Wednesday include No. 3 Andy Murray of Britain defeating Spanish wild card and former No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero (7-5, 6-3, 6-2), and two-time Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick facing 2002 champion Lleyton Hewitt of Australia. This is the only quarter final match still in progress.
In women's action, No. 1 seed Dinara Safina be Sabine Lisicki 6-7, 6-4, 6-1. No. 3 Venus Williams took out No. 11 Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1, 6-2, setting up a semifinal against Safina.
No. 2 Serena Williams defeated Victoria Azarenka, 6-2, 6-3, while. No. 4 Elena Dementieva defeated Francesca Schiavone 6-2, 6-2. This sets up a match with Williams.
