Alexis Arguello, International Boxing Hall of Fame member (1992) and current mayor of Managua, Nicaragua, was found dead today. He was reportedly found with a bullet wound to his chest.

Alexis Arguello retired from boxing in 1995 with a record of 82-8 with 65 knockouts. He was elected mayor of Managua last year. His boxing nickname was “The Explosive Thin Man.”

In 1974 Alexis Arguello knocked out Ruben Olivares in the 13th round to win the world featherweight title. Arguello went on to win the super featherweight and Jr. lightweight titles.

Presidential spokeswoman Rosario Murillo confirmed Alexis Arguello's death and said an autopsy was pending. I have seen reports of this being a suicide, but a wound to the chest is atypical of a suicide. It will be up to the autopsy to confirm.

Bob Arum, who promoted many of Alexis Arguello's fights, told The Associated Press:

"Alexis was one of the greatest fighters and world champions, but more importantly, he was a real man, true gentleman and loyal friend. He will be greatly missed."
