Simplicity Brand Cribs Recalled

On Thursday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced the recall of another 400,000 Simplicity Drop Side Cribs because the "crib’s plastic hardware can break or deform, causing the drop side to detach." Wonderful. This 2009 recall follows other recalls of 1 million Simplicity cribs in 2007 and 2008.

The biggest problem with this recall is that the 2009 recall differs from the earlier ones in that Simplicity is out of business. Specifically, according to the USCPSC:

SFCA Inc., the Reading, Pa.-based company that purchased the assets of juvenile product manufacturer Simplicity Inc. after foreclosure, appears to no longer be conducting day to day operations. SFCA Inc. is no longer answering phone calls, responding to e-mails from consumers, or providing repair kits to fix hundreds of thousands of defective cribs.

As no repair kits will be available, consumers' only recourse with regard to the Simplicity crib recall would be to return the crib to the retailer. If that's not possible (e.g., you purchased the crib at a garage sale), you're stuck with disposing of the crib.

At least 25 incidents have been reported since the September 2007, and all of these were fixed with the replacement hardware sent in response to earlier recalls. Affected cribs were sold nationwide in various major retailers between January 2005 and June 2009. Simplicity cribs were also sold under the Graco name. The CPSC has provided a full list of model numbers and photos for consumers.
