On Sunday, Roger Federer won a draining, five set match against a game Andy Roddick, 5-7. 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 16-14. In doing so Federer also claimed his sixth Wimbledon, as well as his 15th Grand Slam, a record.
Humorously, Nike had a commercial all set up, with congratulations from Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, Serena Williams, and Michael Jordan. Even more, the next commercial aired after that one (and the second after NBC cut away from Wimbledon) was a Netjets commercial involving Federer.
This Wimbledon men's final was one for the ages, with Roddick serving 27 aces, while Federer served 49! The crowd loved Roddick's spirit, as he went all out, and gave him an ovation when he was introduced as the runner-up. It had to be a sad moment for Roddick, but he played at the top of his game.
Unfortunately, Federer was just a little better in the final set. Ironically, in the entire match, the only time Federer broke Roddick's serve was in the final game.
The match was reminiscent of last year's record-longest Wimbledon final. In that men's final, Rafael Nadal beat Federer in a match that ended with 9-7 fifth set. Time: 4-hour, 48-minutes.
Sunday's Wimbledon men's final fell short in terms of time, but not excitement. The match lasted 4 hours, 17 minutes and set the record for games played.
