As Swine Flu Fears Calm, Afghanistan Releases Its Only Pig

During the height of the swine flu panic, Afghanistan locked up its only pig. Yep, as a Muslim country, there was only one pig in the entire nation, in a zoo. He was sequestered for his own protection, but he's now been released.

To be honest, zookeepers feared that citizens might harm the pig. However, H1N1 is spread from person-to-person contact; it isn't spread by pigs.

Zoo manager Aziz Gul Saqib said:

"Our people did not understand that the disease only passes from person to person and felt that the swine influenza might even be spread from the zoo because we have a pig here.

"Other zoos abroad told us not to worry ... when people began to realize the disease doesn't come from the pig itself we decided to release the pig."

The only pig in Afghanistan is named "Khanzir" — Pashto for pig.
