A second honeymoon is meant to be a celebration, but not in this case. Former boxing champion Arturo Gatti, has been found dead in northeastern Brazil, according to several reports.
Arturo Gatti, 37, was scheduled to testify in a trial in New York this week in a lawsuit filed against the New York State Athletic commission by former opponent Joey Gamache. He was on his second honeymoon with his wife Amanda and his 10-month-old son.
In 1995, Arturo Gatti won the International Boxing Federation 130-pound junior lightweight title against Tracy Harris Paterson. He was more of a puncher than a sparrer, more of a brawler than anything else. He once said that he "loved to bleed."
Arturo Gatti won a second world title belt in 2004 when he defeated Italy's Gianluca Branco by decision.
It is unclear how the Arturo Gatti died. CBC News reports that he was found in his underwear, with blood stains on his neck and the back of his head.
In Gamanche's lawsuit, he charges negligence by the NYSAC at the weigh-in for the Feb. 2000 fight that left Gamache nearly dead from head trauma and afflicted with permanent brain damage. According to Gamache, Gatti was 19 pounds overweight for the 141-pound fight, effectively in a different weight class.
