
Brewers 1B Prince Fielder won the baseball All-Star Game's Home Run Derby on Monday night. To do so, he bested Texas outfielder Nelson Cruz 6-5 in the final round. Prince Fielder also provided the longest HR of the night, with a blast of 503 feet.
St. Louis home town favorite and first baseman Albert Pujols disappointed the Busch Stadium crowd. He only made it into the second round with a late first round spurt of HRs. Meanwhile, both Prince Fielder and Nelson Cruz blasted 11 HRs in the first round.
Here's how the first round went: Prince Fielder (11), Nelson Cruz (11), Ryan Howard (PHI, 7), Albert Pujols (STL, 5), Joe Mauer, MIN (5), Carlos Pena (TAM, 5), Adrian Gonzales (SDG, 2), Brandon Inge, DET (0).
Pujols, Pena and Gonzalez had a tiebreaker to decide who moved on, and it was Pujols. In the second round, Prince Fielder had 6 HRs, Cruz 5, Ryan Howard 8, and Pujols 6. With 17 and 16 respectively, Fielder and Cruz moved on to the final round, where Fielder won.
Both Prince Fielder and Nelson Cruz have 22 HRs in the regular season; meanwhile Pujols has 32 to lead the majors. Cruz only made it into the All-Star Game as a late replacement for Angels OF Torii Hunter.
