An early morning shootout on Thursday between police and gunmen in Jersey City, New Jersey ended with two suspects dead and five officers wounded. Besides those five, three others were wounded, though not by gunfire, in the shooting.

The primary suspect was reported to be using an shotgun. Two of the officers were in critical condition and had undergone surgery but were expected to survive. One officer was shot in the face and nearly died, while another suffered gunshot wounds to the neck and chest. The others' injuries weren't life-threatening, so it looks like there will be no police fatalities in the Jersey City shooting.

Gunfire broke out around 5 AM EDT outside an apartment on 24 Reed Street near Bergen Avenue, in Jersey City. The suspects were suspected of committing a robbery in Jersey City with shotguns in June.

According to Police Chief Thomas J. Comey,

"These individuals were being sought by our department for a major crime. This individual (and his accomplice) came ready to go to war with us. That weapon was meant to hunt nothing other than men.”

At this point, the names of the officers wounded in the Jersey City shooting have not been released. Neither have the names of the dead suspects.
