Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox pitched the first perfect game in five years. This comes just a couple of weeks after Johnathan Sanchez of the San Francisco Giants missed a perfect game due to an error on the part of Juan Uribe, on a very easy ground ball.
The Chicago White Sox beat Tampa Bay 5-0. Mark Buehrle pitched his second no-hitter. In a 6-0 win over Texas on April 18, 2007, he faced the minimum 27 batters, with the only runner to reach base, Sammy Sosa (HBP), being picked off later.
Mark Buehrle nearly lost the perfect game, the no-hitter, and the shutout all on one ball in the ninth inning. Center fielder DeWayne Wise, who entered as a defensive replacement in the inning, had to leap and reach above the fence to pull in a drive from Gabe Kapler.
Mark Buehrle said:
"I was hoping it was staying in there, give him enough room to catch it. I know the guys were doing everything they could to save the no-hitter, the perfect game, whatever it might be."
Today's game is the 18th perfect game in major league history. The last perfect game was thrown by Randy Johnson in 2004.
