Formula One Driver Fractures Skull in Wreck

Formula One Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, 28, suffered a life-threatening skull fracture after an accident during Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday. He is in stable condition following emergency surgery.

A loose spring that had fallen off Rubens Barrichello's car hit Felipe Massa in the helmet. This caused the accident, as he swerved into a tire-lined barrier at 120 MPH.

In a statement, the Hungarian defense department said:

"At the time he was admitted to hospital his condition was stable and he was breathing and blood circulation was normal.

"During the course of his examination they established that he suffered a serious, life-threatening injuries, including loss of consciousness and a fracture of the forehead on the left side and a fracture on the base of the skull."

It has been 15 years since a Formula One driver has died on the track; that was three-time champion Ayrton Senna's crash at Imola.
