As expected, Alberto Contador won the 2009 Tour de France. This is his second title. Meanwhile, Lance Armstrong returning to the race, finished 3rd, but looks to 2010 with a new team.
There had been some controversy earlier in the race, when Contador, the 2007 champion, faced questions over who was the team Astana leader. After all, Lance Armstrong was his teammate.
Alberto Contador began the race as the favorite, and finished in 85 hours, 48 minutes, 35 seconds. Second place Andy Schleck was 4:11 seconds behind. Armstrong was 5:24 back. Contador’s margin of victory was the largest since Armstrong collected his last victory in 2005.
Interestingly, since Contador has won in 2007 and this year, when you include Oscar Pereiro’s victory in 2006 and Carlos Sastre’s in 2008, the Tour de France has been won by a Spaniard for four consecutive years.
Next year, however Lance Armstrong plans to return with his own team. The team will be backed by Radio Shack. In fact, Armstrong earlier said his age, 37, is not an issue. Conditioning and race readiness are the key, he feels, to a 2010 win.
