Will Pete Rose Be Welcomed Back to Baseball?

In August 1989, Pete Rose was given a lifetime ban for gambling on baseball. This has prevented him from even being considered for the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. A report surfaced on Monday that he may get a second chance.

According to the New York Daily News, several Hall-of-Famers have been lobbying commissioner Bud Selig for the reinstatement of Pete Rose. The report comes a day after the latest Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Additionally, it trails reports of Hank Aaron stating that steroids users should have asterisks next to their names in the record books, and that "I would like to see Pete (Rose) in. He belongs there."

The NYDN also reported that Joe Morgan and Frank Robinson, both on the HOF's board of directors, also expressed to Selig their hope that Pete Rose would be reinstated.

If in fact Pete Rose, baseball's all-time hits king, is to be reinstated, Selig would insist that Rose make another public apology before reinstating him, the paper added. Rose would still be banned from managing.

While Pete Rose would then be eligible for the Hall of Fame, it would only be on the Veterans Committee ballot, as his 15 years of "normal" eligibility have past, since his retirement.
