On Tuesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 13-6 in favor of Sonia Sotomayor, President Barack Obama's nomination to replace retiring Justice David Souter on the Supreme Court. This will move the nomination on to a full vote of the Senate.
While some conservative Republican senators have stated that Sonia Sotomayor will bring "liberal bias" to the Supreme Court, they have glossed over some points. For one, she would replace Justice David Souter, already a liberal on the court. Additionally, it should be clear to all that no matter what people want to try to believe, every Supreme Court nominess has some sort of bias.
I doubt that any could (validly) claim that the last two justices added to the Supreme Court, Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, fail to bring a conservative bias to the Supreme Court. They could try, though.
The vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee for Sonia Sotomayor was 13 - 6, with Republican Lindsey Graham, joining panel Democrats in voting for Sotomayor. To contrast, Alito passed 10 - 8, and Roberts passed 13 - 5.
The full Senate is expected to vote on Sotomayor's nomination next week. At this point, there is expected to be little challenge to her being confirmed.
