LH hitting OF Mark Kotsay, 33, is a 13-year vet with 110 home runs and 614 RBIs over 13 Major League seasons, and a .281 career batting average. This year, he was designated for assignment on July 24th, after hitting .257 with one homer and five RBIs in 27 games.
RH hitting OF Brian Anderson, 27, was hitting .238 with two homers on the season, and was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on July 20. You can see from these stats that neither Anderson nor Mark Kotsay is a game-changer.
On the other hand, Mark Kotsay is a fine defensive OF. Since the start of the 1998 season, Kotsay ranks third among all major-league outfielders with 113 assists, behind only Bobby Abreu (117) and Vladimir Guerrero (115). He also has a .373 (25-67) lifetime average as a pinch-hitter.
