Jobless Woman Sues College For Tuition

Trina Thompson, 27, filed a lawsuit last week against Monroe College in Bronx Supreme Court. As she has been unable to find employment since graduating, she is suing for the $70,000 she paid in tuition.

It's not that the degree she received is useless. The reason Trina Thompson is suing is because, she alleges, Monroe College's Office of Career Advancement hasn't provided her with the leads and career advice it promised as part of the program.

The college offers two-year, four-year, and graduate programs (through the King Graduate School of Business). Trina Thompson's degree is in information technology (IT).

Personally, I would have told Trina Thompson that in this age of outsourcing, IT is not a career to be pursuing. Want a job that can't be outsourced? Look to a job that requires face-to-face interaction. An example would be the service industry; unfortunately, those are usually low-paying jobs.

Monroe College insists it helps graduates in their careers, and that Trina Thompson's lawsuit isn't worth the paper it's written on. School spokesman Gary Axelbank said:

"The lawsuit is completely without merit. The college prides itself on the excellent career-development support that we provide to each of our students, and this case does not deserve further consideration."

#1 Welcome to the real world

Welcome to the real world Miss Thompson.

It's things like this that give graduates a bad name. The world doesn't owe her anything, it's up to her to chase down graduate careers, not for the college or anyone else to hand them to her. It hasn't been simple for a long, long time and throwing lawsuits around is going to make you even less employable.
