In a ceremony on Monday, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei formally endorsed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for a second term as president. However, the event was skipped by opposition leaders and critics of the disputed election.

The endorsement clears the way for Ahmadinejad. He is scheduled to take the oath of office on Wednesday in parliament, despite cries of fraud in that group by many pro-reform legislators.

The endorsement ceremony was boycotted by former presidents Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and Mohammad Khatami, as well as defeated opposition candidates Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi.

Despite protests and charges of fraud, the Supreme Leader seemed quite pleased with the election results. State TV said that Khamenei described the June 12 election a "vote for the fight against arrogance and brave resistance to the international domination-seekers."

It remains to be seen what, if any, protests will occur on Wednesday. One would assume the government would be well-prepared for any such move by citizens and opposition candidates.
