Wednesday, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was sworn in for a second term as Iranian president. This comes nearly two months after a disputed election triggered massive violent street protests, and two days after Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei formally endorsed him..

Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters were in the streets near Parlimament, chanting "Deaht to the Dictator." Security forces used batons to disperse them.

At the same time, key opposition leaders, moderate lawmakers and all three of Ahmadinejad's election rivals boycotted the swearing-in ceremony.

In his inaugural address, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad remained defiant. He said:

"We must play a key role in the management of the world. We will not remain silent. We will not tolerate disrespect, interference and insults. I will spare no effort to safeguard the frontiers of Iran.

"Some countries have not recognized the elections or extended their congratulations. They do not respect the rights of other nations, yet they recognize themselves as the yardstick for democracy. Nobody in Iran is waiting for anyone's congratulations."

It's evident which countries he's speaking of that did not congratulate him: the U.K. and U.S. come immediately to mind. Protests over the election are likely to continue; the election was a landslide yet exit polling did not show anything like those numbers.
