Eli Manning Set to Sign Six-Year Contract With NY Giants

Eli Manning, who led the New York Giants to a surprising victory over the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl in the 2007 season (Feb. 2008 is when the game was played), is set to sign a contract with the New York Giants that will make him one of the highest-paid players in the NFL, reports say.

The reports indicate the NYG are offering Eli Manning a six-year contract extension worth $97.5 million, with $35 million of it guaranteed. The report has appeared on multiple mainstream media sites; the contract has not yet been signed, however.

Giants general manager Jerry Reese said:

"He (Eli Manning) is a franchise quarterback. He has done everything we asked him to do. He has come in, taken a lot of flack from you guys [the media] and he just keeps going. He does what we ask him on the field and he does what we ask him to do off the field. He is a good football player."

When I take a look at Eli Manning's stats, however, I'm not impressed. His highest QB rating was last season, 86.4. Coming from a team that used to see QBs with over 100 ratings (the 49ers), I'm not sure he deserves this type of money. On the other hand, there is a dearth of QBs in the NFL with the quality of Steve Young and Joe Montana, so maybe it's what the market will bear.

While he is a former Super Bowl hero, Eli Manning is, IMHO, in no sense as good a QB as his brother, Peyton Manning. He is decent, and this in no way will compare to the deal I consider the biggest idiot move of all time: Barry Zito's signing by the SF Giants (baseball) for $120 million.
