John Hughes, Director of "The Breakfast Club," Dies at 59

John Hughes, writer-director of a number of iconic teen-based films, including "Home Alone," "Pretty in Pink," "The Breakfast Club" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," died Thursday. He was 59.

Spokeswoman Michelle Bega said that John Hughes died of a heart attack during a morning walk in Manhattan, He was in New York to visit family.

Many young actors and actresses were made stars by John Hughes' movies. Among them were Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy, Macauly Culkin, Lili Taylor, John Cusack, Steve Carell, and Judd Nelson.

Actor Matthew Broderick, who worked with John Hughes in 1986 when he played the title character in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," said:

"I am truly shocked and saddened by the news about my old friend John Hughes. He was a wonderful, very talented guy and my heart goes out to his family."
