Goodbye John Madden, Hello Cris Collinsworth

He's got big shoes to fill, but with Sunday's Hall of Fame Game 2009, the opening game of the NFL pre-season, also debuts Al Michael's new partner, Cris Collinsworth. He replaces John Madden, who in fact is irreplaceable, many would say, on NBC's Sunday Night Football.

Cris Collinsworth was, for eight seasons, a wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals. John Madden, of course, besides leading the Oakland Raiders to a Super Bowl win, has been considered the #1 football analyst for decades. In addition to that, Madden is also in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and has his own video game.

Given all that, how can Cris Collinsworth step into this shoes? The comparisons with John Madden will be there for most of the season. Quite a few people, including those who hired him, one would hope, feel he can handle the job.

Lisa Guerrero, who spent one season as a sideline reporter on "Monday Night Football" when John Madden was the analyst, said Cris Collinsworth has the personality and knowledge to make the job his own.

"I don't even think it will be a hiccup for Cris (Collinsworth). He knows football from one end to the other, he stays up on stuff, he's a relaxed on-camera presence, he knows Al. Plus, he's accomplished in his own right. He has his own style."

"Sunday Night Football" producer Frank Gaudelli said of the Cris Collinworth - John Madden transition:

"It's not like we're going from a veteran star to a rookie. We're going from a veteran star to another veteran star."

Are you ready for some football?
