Usain Bolt recorded a 9.58 in the 100 meters today, obliterating his own world record. In doing so, he easily won the World Championship final in Berlin.

Usain Bolt's 9.58 easily surpassed his 9.69, which he set at the Olympics in Beijing last year. Bolt showboated some during that race, and a professor calculated that he could have hit 9.55 if he had run hard the whole way.

Meanwhile, Tyson Gay of the U.S. ran a great time, against anyone else that is. His 9.71 was second, but place him way behind Usain Bolt's 9.58. Asafa Powell of Jamaica took bronze in 9.84.

Amazingly, if Tyson Gay had run 9.71 one year and a day ago, that would have been a world record. That puts Usain Bolt's 9.58 into better perspective.

Gay never led, but he pushed Bolt. At 90 meters, he looked for Gay, and then at the scoreboard, and then, showboating again slightly, he pounded his chest as the 9.58 came up.

Of his 9.71, Gay, who was hampered in practice with a nagging groin injury, said, "I can definitely run faster." Can he run faster than Usain Bolt's 9.58, is the question.
