Bill Grows Into a Hurricane

Three times the trouble, as tropical storm Claudette has made landfall in Florida. Meanwhile, Bill has grown into a hurricane, but its projected path shows it heading for Bermuda, and Ana has weakened into a tropical depression.

Currently Bill is centered about 1,100 miles east of the Lesser Antilles and moving west-northwest at 22 mph. The five-day forecast shows the Hurricane Bill's projected path passing northeast of Puerto Rico and heading toward Bermuda.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami believes the storm could become a major hurricane in the next couple of days. Currently Hurricane Bill has maximum sustained winds near 75 mph that were expected to increase and top 110 mph, which is the threshold for a major hurricane, as it continues along its projected path.

While Bermuda watches Hurricane Bill's projected path with concern, Claudette has made landfall in Florida. The storm was downgraded to a tropical depression on Monday morning with top sustained winds near 35 mph after coming ashore a few hours earlier. This is the first named storm to hit the U.S. mainland this year.

Claudette was headed across Alabama toward northeastern Mississippi, bringing heavy rains, but is not expected to cause significant flooding or wind damage.

Meanwhile, Cuba breathed a sigh of relief over Hurricane Bill's projected path. Last year Cuba was hit by three major hurricanes: Gustav and Ike, both in a 10-day window at the end of August and beginning of September and Paloma in early November.
