The U.S. Debt Clock is a billboard-sized running total digital display which constantly updates to show the current United States public debt and each American family's share of it. It made headlines months ago when the U.S. debt surpassed $10 trillion dollars, and it ran out of sufficient digits to display the amount.

The U.S. debt clock is is currently installed on Sixth Avenue (Avenue of the Americas) in Manhattan, New York City. It's in the news again, but simply as a reminder of how bad things have become.

It should be noted that we are in a perfect storm of problems. The recession means more unemployment and less revenue for companies, which also means less tax revenue for America. Meanwhile, there are a host of problems to be addressed, all of which require money. You can see the U.S. debt clock better get extra digit(s) soon, based on that.

In fact, according to new figures from the government, the budget deficit for the next decade now will stand at $9 trillion, up from a prior estimate of $7 trillion. The problem is that the government is in the same shape as John Q. Public: too much borrowing.

Of course, before we go blaming Barack Obama, let's remember what kind of a mess he inherited. In other words, a huge mess.

Still, that doesn't mean the debt numbers are not scary. Can't make it to Manhattan to see the U.S. debt clock? There's an online version here. That version doesn't have digit problems, but it's still pretty scary.
