California Wildfires Spur Emergency Declaration

Three separate wildfires have prompted California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to declare a state of emergency in two counties: Los Angeles and Monterey. Wildfires in both counties threatened several homes as the blazes spread.

There are two fires in the Angeles National Forest, above the NE suburbs of Los Angeles. Firefighters are fighting those blazes, while at the same time cleaning up the remnants of a Palos Verdes Peninsula fire that burnt six homes.

As many as 500 homes have been evacuated. Southern California will experience another day of triple-digit temperatures, which will not help firefighters, as well.

In Monterey County, a wildfire near Soledad has reached 5,000 acres. Nearly 100 homes have been evacuated. Just as in Southern California, crews are expecting for another day of high temperatures, low humidity and gusty winds.

The Monterey County fire also threatens Pinnacles National Monument. It began on Thursday afternoon. Officials say the fire was caused by agricultural fireworks used to scare animals away from crops.
