Right now the Giants have a formidable rotation, with Tim Lincecum (last year's Cy Young winner), Barry Zito (with a sub-2.00 ERA in the second half of the season) Matt Cain, and Jonathan "no-hit" Sanchez. Randy Johnson, their fifth starter, is still on the DL, though SF hopes to see him back later this year. Brad Penny will fill the fifth spot until then, they hope.
In 24 starts for Boston this season, the 31-year-old Brad Penny went 7-8 with a 5.61 ERA. In four August starts, Penny had posted an ERA of 8.31. For his career, he has 101 wins and a 4.18 ERA spanning 10 seasons.
Brad Penny was put on waivers last week by the Red Sox but wasn't claimed. Monday was the last day for him to sign with a team if he hoped to be on a postseason roster.
The Giants (72-59) are tied for the National League wild-card lead with the Colorado Rockies. They swept the Rockies his weekend and SF is also only six games back of the Dodgers in the NL West. They'll pay Penny only a pro-rated share of the Major League minimum, which is less than $100,000.
