Hurricane Jimena Continues to Track to Baja California

Hurricane Jimena is currently a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds at 145 mph. Its current track is expected to pick up speed over the next few days as it travels along its projected path. Hurricane Jimena should reach the southern part of the Baja California Peninsula by Tuesday, September 1, 2009.

On Monday afternoon, workers at the Cabo San Lucas marina prepared for the storm, boarding up windows and securing their boats, as Hurricane Jimena tracked toward them. Jimena is only 11 MPH short of reaching Category 5 status, at 155 MPH.

Local Civil Protection authorities stated that at least 10,000 families will be evacuated from potential flood zones. Approximately 60 shelters will be set up.

As Hurricane Jimena tracked toward Baja California, organizers of an international financial meeting scheduled for Cabo San Lucas this week "made tracks." They decided to move their conference, with more than 170 representatives from 54 countries, to Mexico City.

Advice from authorities: get out. However, despite Hurricane Jimena tracking right for them, some are staying put. Some want the excitement of a "really big hurricane," and others, such as surfers, want the big waves that will come with Jimena.
