Melanie Oudin Continues Her Run at the U.S. Open

Melanie Oudin, the 17-year-old from Georgia, ranked only 70th in the world, continued her Cinderella story Monday at the U.S. Open, with a win over 13th-seeded Nadia Petrova. Based on the search trends, one might wonder if people think Melanie Oudin's shoes are the key to her wins, however.

Melanie Oudin's shoes are pink Adida tennis shoes with "Believe" stamped on them. You have to bet that Adidas is happy with her U.S Open run.

So far in this U.S. Open, Melanie Oudin and her shoes have beaten No. 4 Elena Dementieva and No. 29 Maria Sharapova prior to today. Today's match was anything bu easy.

Melanie Oudin and her shoes had to come from behind Monday at the U.S. Open. The final score was 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3 over 13th-seeded Nadia Petrova.

Oudin held off two break points that could have put her behind 5-3 in the second set, and probably would have meant the end to the match. The third set was actually a relative breeze, with Melanie Oudin's pink shoes flying around the court, taking advantage of 22 unforced errors by Petrova.

Her next opponent? That's still TBD, but if it turns out to be s sixth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova, it will be the 2004 U.S. Open champion and the only Grand Slam tournament winner left on Oudin’s side of the bracket. Kuzetsova is also Russian, and coincidentally, all four of Oudin's wins have come against Russians.

It's a feel good story, so let's hope Melanie Oudin and her shoes keep things going. We'll be watching.
