The No. 3-seeded Nadal beat No. 13 Gael Monfils 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 Tuesday night, continuing his quest to complete a career Grand Slam. A career Grand Slam would mean winning at least one time in each of the four majors, the Australian Open, Wimbledon, the French Open, and the U.S. Open.
By beating Gael Monfils, Nadal will overtake Andy Murray, who lost earlier in the day to Marin Cilic, in next week's ATP rankings. Nadal was No. 1 or 2 from July 2005 until three weeks ago, when he dropped to No. 3.
Despite reportedly ailing, Nadal showed no signs of problems against Gael Monfils. You may recall that sore knees that prompted him to pull out of Wimbledon and Nadal also had a stomach muscle issue that arose during his last match.
Nadal meets No. 11 Fernando Gonzalez next. While Nadal was beating Gael Monfils, Gonzalez took out No. 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3), 6-4.
